St. Luke's celebrates cornerstone anniversary

by Fofo Johnson, St. Luke's member

One hundred years ago on Oct. 4, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church laid its cornerstone in Anchorage, and in recognition of this anniversary, the parish will kick off a yearlong celebration with a dinner dance that evening to be followed by several other events over the next 12 months.

St. Luke's congregation, formed 135 years, initially held services in Hobbs Chapel and the Shallcross house until the present church, located about a half mile away at 1208 Maple Lane, was completed.  It held its first service in there on Oct. 10, 1909. Because of our affiliation with Hobbs Chapel and Anchorage, the committee has decided the profit from these events will be given to the restoration of Hobbs Memorial Chapel and Cemetery.

The Cornerstone Dance will be held at the former horse show ring on Maple Lane, which is located on the church campus and is used for a variety of functions. The dance will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. (ET) with music will be provided by The Epics. A buffet will be served, and beverages will be available for purchase.  Tickets are $25 a person, and tables are available.

Please invite your friends and neighbors and be a part of our festive evening.

For information and ticket purchases, call the St. Luke's office at 245-8827.
